Heritage Open Days celebrates England’s fantastic architecture and culture by offering free access to places that usually charge an admission fee or are closed altogether to the public. 

Take advantage of this rare opportunity to go behind the scenes and explore the incredible archives and collections held at the Shakespeare Birthplace Trust.

Behind the scenes - Tours of the Strongrooms 

Meet our knowledgable and friendly staff and view a selection of museum objects and archival photos including stage and costume designs, rare early books and documents relating to the history of Stratford-upon-Avon and Shakespeare himself.

highlights include:

  • The Parish Register of Holy Trinity Church (including records of Shakespeare’s baptism and burial)
  • Production photos and costume designs from the RSC collection
  • Early theatre ephemera including playbills and items from the Bram Stoker Collection

Tour times:

Archives Tours

  • Thursday 12th - 2.30pm
  • Friday 13th - 10.30am
  • Saturday 14th & Sunday 15th - 10.00am, 11.00am, 14.30pm plus additional tour at 13.00pm (bookable only on the day)

Our very special artworks tour also offers a chance to see a selection of the fabulous paintings and sculptures in our collection.

Artworks Tour

  • Saturday 14th; 2.30pm

All tours take place at The Shakespeare Centre on Henley Street.

Due to popular demand these tours must be pre-booked (13.00pm weekend tours can only be booked on the day).  To reserve your place please tel. 01789 204016 and ask for the Library and Archive Department.

Harvard House

14th & 15th September, 10am-4pm

PLUS a chance to visit this beautiful Elizabethan town house on Chapel Street in Stratford-upon-Avon, which has connections to John Harvard, founder of Harvard University. Harvard House is not ordinarily open to members of the public, so don't miss this fantastic opportunity!

Entry to Harvard House is free between 10am-4pm.  Booking is not essential.
