As the Shakespeare Birthplace Trust continues its exploration of the Women Who Made Shakespeare, visitors are invited to the family home of Anne Hathaway to discover the real story of grief, loss and love that is portrayed in Maggie O'Farrell’s award-winning and celebrated novel, Hamnet.
Following the success of last year, visitors have another unique opportunity to discover the hidden stories of love, loss and Tudor healing with intimate after-hours tours in the beautiful surroundings that inspired the much-loved novel.
‘’Since the publication of Maggie O'Farrell’s book we have seen more and more visitors coming to Anne Hathaway’s Cottage specifically because of the connection with the vivid world that has been conjured in Hamnet, with many visitors wanting to immerse themselves in the heartbreaking story whilst walking in the footsteps of a young Anne.
So, following the overwhelmingly positive feedback from our special events last year we are excited to welcome visitors for the special after-hours tours to explore both the plot of the novel and shed a light on the lived experience of Anne and her family.’’

During the tour, which takes place after Anne Hathaway’s Cottage closes, audiences will be treated to a tailored experience where they will uncover the real story that inspired Hamnet, and more importantly that of the mother’s perspective – that of Anne Hathaway.
On arrival, guests will be greeted by their very own personal guide, dressed in traditional Tudor costume, and will be invited to engage in discussion and learn about the beautiful surroundings that inspired the much-loved novel.
To enhance the experience, the costumed guides will offer a specially crafted welcome drink, inspired and infused with the botanicals and herbs that grow in the gardens.
Following this, guests have the unique chance to explore the hidden stories of family life, medicinal knowledge and heartache from centuries past as they are guided through the 15th-century building and its picturesque grounds that was once home to generations of the Hathaway family.

The exclusive tours take place on Thursday 2 May, Thursday 11 July and Thursday 5 September 2024, from 5.30pm to 6.30pm. Tickets cost £20 per person and include the welcome drink. As most of the tour will take place outside, guests are recommended to wear weather-appropriate clothing and footwear.
