The Shakespeare Birthplace Trust, the charity dedicated to preserving, sharing and celebrating the life, works and times of one the world’s greatest writers, has today announced the appointment of Rachael North as its new CEO.
For the last 6 months Rachael, who has been with the Trust for just over 5 years, has undertaken the role of Interim CEO, having previously been the Director of Museum and Public Programmes.
Rachael will take up her post immediately and will be responsible for leading a talented team of staff and volunteers to deliver the charity’s mission and strategic vision.
In a statement about her new role, Rachael shared her enthusiasm for the future of the Trust, saying:
"It's a genuine privilege to assume the role of permanent CEO for the Shakespeare Birthplace Trust, the museum of Shakespeare based in his hometown of Stratford-upon-Avon. Shakespeare's relentless examination of every human emotion and experience is as resonant now as it ever was, and the Trust plays an important role in bringing people together in an active and contemporary conversation about Shakespeare."
Under Rachael's leadership, the Shakespeare Birthplace Trust aims to continue its commitment to engaging communities and visitors from across the UK and around the world in the ongoing enjoyment and exploration of Shakespeare's life, work and legacy. Her vision for the Trust’s future includes expanding the reach and impact of its Designated Museum, library and archive collections and celebrating the unique cultural contribution of the Shakespeare family homes. The charity is also looking forward to the opening of a new exhibition and visitor experience, ‘Becoming Shakespeare’, in May.
Chair of the Board of Trustees, Lady Cobham said “There were over 300 applications for this important position, and, like all shortlisted candidates, Rachael went through a rigorous process, overseen by Arts Council England. She has over 25 years of experience in the cultural sector, with a track record in devising and implementing innovative visitor experience programmes, leading conservation and community engagement and spearheading capital development.”
Lady Cobham added “I am excited to be working with Rachael at this pivotal moment in time for the Trust in its continued post-pandemic recovery. We share an ambition and a passion for its future aims to reach out to an ever-wider audience locally, nationally and globally.”
