Behind the scenes: The Strongbox

Behind-the-scenes access in the run up to the grand opening of Shakespeare's New Place in Summer 2016.

A figure draws a curtain aside to show a close-up of the sculpture of a strongbox.

Today’s reveal is a Shakespeare’s New Place feature that reminds us of his wealth and status in Stratford-upon-Avon.

In the photograph, you can see a detail from the strongbox - the first sculpture you’ll see as you enter Shakespeare’s New Place. A strongbox is exactly the kind of thing a moderately wealthy man like Shakespeare would have needed, to keep things safe. Things like cash, his will, and the deeds to his house.

The sculpture will be cast in bronze at Morris Singer’s Foundry, established in 1848, the oldest fine art foundry in the world. Although cast in metal, the strongbox will show all the detail typical of these historic safes - leather strapwork and intricate locking systems. This one will lie open, revealing facsimiles of money and legal papers
