Discover more about how the tourist experience at Anne Hathaway's Cottage was transformed by Mary Baker.
From the middle of the nineteenth century until her death in 1899, Mary Baker transformed the tourist experience at Anne Hathaway’s Cottage.
The property had been a disorganized and uncoordinated trek that visitors had had to manage for themselves; Baker carefully curated and controlled the narrative, thereby positioning her famous ancestor into the centre of Shakespeare’s romantic legacy.
How and why did Mary Baker’s ‘creation’ of Anne Hathaway’s Cottage succeed?
What motivated the Shakespeare Birthplace Trust to purchase the Cottage?
How did the site help present Shakespeare to the world?
Led by Professor Katherine Scheil, University of Minnesota, and Guy Young, University of Birmingham.

About our Research Conversations
Every month we host a live online talk, via zoom, which provides you with the opportunity to listen to people who are engaged in Shakespeare-related research. The talk begins with a thirty-minute presentation and followed by an open discussion.
All of our Research Conversations are completely free to attend, though we do encourage donations in order to support our work and keep Shakespeare's story alive. So if you are in the position to support us with a donation, no matter large or small, we would be incredibly grateful.
Listen back: If you were unable to attend our previous virtual Research Conversations, want a recap, or completely new to it and want to see what it's all about, you can catch up on our audio recordings .
This event is part of our multi-year programme, celebrating The Women Who Made Shakespeare
