On Judith Shakespeare Quiney

December's Research Conversation

For our final Research Conversation this year, we will welcome Laurie Maguire who will share with us the creative and archival challenges of writing a biography of Judith Quiney.

Given how little is known about Judith Quiney (née Shakespeare), writing a biography of her might seem something of a fool’s errand. Judith’s life is usually told as a footnote to other people’s (her father’s or that of her sister, Susanna) and the tantalising gaps – why is she not buried with her family in Holy Trinity Church? Why did her father alter his will? – are speculatively filled in, never to Judith’s advantage.

We're looking forward to hearing from Professor Laurie about the kinds of responsibility a biographer has to a life that has not been written before, and what help do hybrid forms of fiction and biography offer.

Led by Professor Laurie Maguire.

About our Research Conversations
Every month we host a live online talk which provides you with the opportunity to listen to people who are engaged in Shakespeare-related research. The talk begins with a thirty-minute presentation, followed by an open discussion.

All of our Research Conversations are completely free to attend, though we do encourage donations in order to support our work and keep Shakespeare's story alive. So if you are in the position to support us with a donation, no matter large or small, we would be incredibly grateful.

Listen back: If you were unable to attend our previous virtual Research Conversations, want a recap, or completely new to it and want to see what it's all about, you can catch up on our audio recordings .

This event is part of our multi-year programme, celebrating The Women Who Made Shakespeare
