Susanna Hall and Hall's Croft

July's Research Conversation

Discover more about a fascinating project to re-explore the life of Susanna Hall, William and Anne’s daughter through documentary evidence.

For the next edition of our series of Research Conversations we'll be joined by Dr Ailsa Grant-Ferguson and Roz Sklar who will share with us a research collaboration between the University of Brighton and the Shakespeare Birthplace Trust, re-exploring the life of William and Anne Shakespeare's eldest child, Susanna Hall.

Susanna Hall , married the physician, John Hall, in 1607, and this fascinating project has enabled us to explore how we can reread and represent the various pieces of documentary evidence for Susanna’s life within both academic and heritage contexts.

How might we reconsider early modern women in their public and private spheres?

How might we develop our understanding of their health, well-being and ‘treatment’? The outcomes of the project include an Artist Lab, a Digital Spatial Archive, and the newly-planted ‘Susanna’s Garden’ at Hall’s Croft.

About our Research Conversations
Every month we host a live online talk, via zoom, which provides you with the opportunity to listen to people who are engaged in Shakespeare-related research. The talk begins with a thirty-minute presentation and followed by an open discussion.

All of our Research Conversations are completely free to attend, though we do encourage donations in order to support our work and keep Shakespeare's story alive. So if you are in the position to support us with a donation, no matter large or small, we would be incredibly grateful.

Listen back: If you were unable to attend our previous virtual Research Conversations, want a recap, or completely new to it and want to see what it's all about, you can catch up on our audio recordings .

This event is part of our multi-year programme, celebrating The Women Who Made Shakespeare
